Summer is BACK and in full force. We had a beautiful hot sunny weekend and we took advantage. Friday night we headed out to get a bite to eat at Maïs, a new-ish Latin/taco place in the mile end that we had been meaning to check out for a while. We were a little less enthusiastic after hearing some so-so or bad reviews from friends and the world wide web, lots of people said the service was rushed, they seemed to want you to eat and get out, that the wait was long and that the food wasn’t impressive. HOWEVER, we were seated (outside) after about a 10 minute wait, the staff was extremely chatty and helpful, the tacos were delicious and my mojito…s were delicious. I ordered a beet taco and a zucchini taco. The latter ended up being a zucchini flower taco (HELLO!) which I could have ordered 17 more of. But we were satisfied with 2 tapa style tacos each and I finished it off with a homemade chocolate bar that was all kinds of perfect, not to sweet and not too boring, with hints of spice and orange.
Saturday afternoon we headed up to see the sidewalk sale in little Italy (and go see my good friend the cronetto). Despite our original plan to get a bite of pizza (when in little Italy…), we ended up at Dinette Triple Crown. I couldn’t believe Matt had never taken me there before! Since the place offers southern/soul food, he assumed a vegetarian would leave pretty hungry. However, as you may know, I am slightly obsessed with macaroni and cheese so as soon as I saw those magical words on the menu, it was a done deal. The restaurant is TINY and slightly off the beaten path, you have to know it’s there because you’re not likely gonna stumble into it. But what they lack in space they make up for in picnic baskets and red checkered tablecloths. You see, there is a big park right across the street. And Dinette Triple Crown will prepare you a basket with a tablecloth, dishes, cutlery, your food and drinks to enjoy a (hassle free) picnic in the park. We ordered mac n cheese and a biscuit/fried chicken/gravy mess for matt with a side of collared greens and cornbread. I also tried out their (homemade) ginger beer. The sun was blaring but we found an empty table under the shade of a tree and we set up the picnic and then deliciously clogged our arteries and then I topped the whole thing with a nice healthy cronetto… On the way home, we stumbled upon a garage sale where everything unfortunately seemed to fit me perfectly. The hoarder in me won over reason and I bought the pair of Kangoroos (purple!!!) and the leather ankle boots for 15$.
My oldest sister and her boyfriend – who live in Australia – got to town for a few weeks so on Sunday, the fam got together for dinner. After dinner, the aussies needed their fix of mason jars filled with booze so as per tradition, we headed to the distillerie for a drink and some (also traditional) tequila shots. We laughed, joked, made fun of each other and quoted the Simpsons. Then it was (past) time for bed so we all went our separate ways and started counting down the minutes to next weekend.
I am now dying to try that picnic restaurant! xo
you are going to LOVE it! It’s right up your alley – and not too far form you either I believe.
