Montreal | Brunch @ Bistro Rosie

I haven’t posted about any of my favourite local brunch spots on the blog in quite a long time. In fact, after going into the archives, I realized the last time was in December…. of 2016! Yikes. I still share tons of pictures on instagram – check my story highlights – but there’s just something more intimate about writing/reading a blog post.

And after enjoying a great meal at Bistro Rosie, I thought it was time to take this little blog section out of retirement. While everything is fresh in my mind, I will share my experience with you guys.

We were big fans of chef Jérémy Daniel-Six (and his brother) when we ate at their tiny Micro Resto La Famille back in 2013. When we went for brunch, I had a persimmon egg dish that I still think about to this day. Much to our surprise and disappointment, they closed a year later. When the brothers opened Ma’tine, we were happy to have a similar brunch spot back in town, however the ambiance wasn’t the same as the 9 seater micro restaurant we had loved. In 2016 Ma’tine closed and they took time to spend with their families. We accepted defeat and moved on.

So last fall when we heard the chef was back with a new restaurant in Rosemont, it was only a matter of time before we would check things out. And of course we had to see if this place could live up to our expectations. And it did! They offer two ($25) or three ($35) service meals for brunch and the prices include coffee or tea and tip. The first service is a plate of fresh bread and pastries from Automne Boulangerie with jam and marmalade. We especially loved the lemon butter on the thick country bread. For the second service I had the carrot cake with roasted carrots, apricots, raisins and a poached egg. Matt had the sausage and potatoes topped with a sunny side up egg. Also on the menu were a lobster dish, one with nordic shrimp. There was also an Israeli couscous with fiddleheads, asparagus and a duck egg. If you follow me on instagram, you would have heard me talking about fiddleheads for breakfast over the past few weeks so it took a lot for me to not order both dishes. But having had a savoury carrot cake dish as an amuse bouche at Ile Flottante last week, I was eager to try another salty sweet carrot dish. We really didn’t need to go for the 3 courses but as they say: when in Rome, order strawberry shortcake for brunch dessert.

We had a perfect view of our meals (and those of the other tables) being prepared while we sat at the bar. We love being able to interact with the chefs while they plate our dishes. After our meal was over, I wanted to stay on that stool and watch him prepare meals all day long, it was like watching an artist spread paint on a canvas. But alas the bill came and we had to move on with our day. I can’t wait to go back, and I feel like there will be a whole new set of dishes next time we head in there for brunch. With a dinner option Tuesday through Friday nights, we may just need to go back for my birthday in a couple of weeks. I can’t say enough about this place, it left me feeling so satisfied and looking forward to the next visit.
