Just about 2 hours outside of Montréal is a really great little vegetarian sugar shack owned and run by a sweet couple, La Pause Sylvestre. They don’t have a website, you have to call on the telephone to reserve and up until last year you had to send your deposit cheque by mail to their home.
I discovered the existence of this gem about 3 years ago but when I tried to make reservations in April, they had already been completely booked for the season. So last year I made sure to book early in the year and we enjoyed a nice dinner prepared by the couple.
This year I really wanted to go for lunch (natural light for my photos and no driving home 2 hours in the dark after dinner) so we snatched up the last lunch spots available, which ended up being the 1st of may. Normally in May we are no longer thinking about sugar shacking but with the chilly weather we have been getting the last few days, it felt more like April and so everything worked out in the end and we were able to enjoy the real experience.
On the menu – as usual – were millet pie, adzuki bean pie, tofu onion pie, omelet, baked beans, potatoes, pickles, pickled beets, bread, sauerkraut and coleslaw. After dinner, we walked around the property exploring the area while they cleaned up and prepped dessert. Carole then came out and rang the bell to let us know it was time to enjoy buckwheat crepes with maple syrup, maple squares and to top it all off maple taffy on snow.
